How to Take Care of Your Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo, a type of grass that grows and matures fast, has many diverse uses. From food to construction, bamboo can be found in many homes and offices. Bamboo fencing and bamboo flooring are two of the popular uses of bamboo today. When polished, bamboo flooring resembles wood flooring. Bamboo flooring can be natural, dyed or stained. While bamboo is a sturdy, durable material, proper care still needs to be taken in order to keep bamboo flooring long lasting and looking good.

Bamboo flooring can have different finishes. However, the maintenance procedure for bamboo flooring is mostly the same regardless of the finish. For instance, walking on a dusty or dirty bamboo flooring can easily damage the bamboo flooring's finish. Thus, you need to clean the bamboo floor regularly to avoid damaging the floor. Use a dust mop, vacuum or brush to clean the bamboo flooring to keep dust, dirt and grit from accumulating.

When cleaning your bamboo flooring, pay special attention on areas where dirt and dust collect more -- near entrances, under and around furniture and appliances. These are also the areas where people tread on. You can place mats or rugs in these areas to prevent tracking dirt to other areas of the floor. However, avoid using rubber-backed mats or rugs because they will cause discoloration of your bamboo flooring. Regularly air and shake mats and rugs.

Use floor protector pads on bottoms or legs of furniture to avoid damaging the finish and scratching the bamboo flooring. Especially use floor protector pads on furniture that are regularly used and moved -- chairs, tables, sofas, etc. Check the floor pads regularly to make sure that dust and dirt have not accumulated and that the pads have not worn out. If you have furniture with metal or narrow casters over the wheels, take care when moving them because they can dent and damage the bamboo flooring. High heeled shoes can also damage bamboo flooring so take care when walking in a room with bamboo flooring.
